ペルーのアグアス・カリエンテスはマチュピチュへ向かう多くの旅行者が通り過ぎる場所です。私もまた、同じように目的地へ向かうことに気を取られ、周囲の風景にはほとんど注意を払っていませんでした。
　しかし、突然の雨で一変します。人びとが雨宿りのために足早に立ち去り、通りは静かに。山々には薄い霧が立ちこめ、ほんの少し前まで見過ごしていた景色に目が向くようになりました。
　私は谷を見渡せる橋の上で立ち止まり、しばらくの間、ひとりでその思いがけない静けさを味わいました。それは旅の後も長く心に残る穏やかなひとときでした。
　その時に目にした細かな風景を残したいと思い、帰宅後、Ｈから9Ｂまでのグラファイト鉛筆を使い、質感とコントラストを意識しながらこの風景を描き上げました。

This drawing captures Aguas Calientes, Peru, a place many visitors pass through on their way to Machu Picchu. Like most of them, I was focused on reaching my destination and paid little attention to the landscape around me.
But a sudden rain shower changed that. As people rushed for cover and the streets emptied, the atmosphere became much quieter. A light mist settled over the mountains, and I found myself noticing a view I had completely overlooked only moments before.
I stopped on a bridge overlooking the valley and enjoyed the unexpected calm alone for several minutes. It was a peaceful moment, one that stayed with me long after the trip.
Wanting to preserve the details I had observed, I later developed the landscape at home using graphite pencils ranging from H to 9B, working with texture and contrast.
